Raymond Joseph Birnbaum of Hankinson, North Dakota | 1940 – 2023 | Obituary


Raymond Joseph Birnbaum was born January 2, 1940, in Hankinson, ND.  Son of Veronica Caroline Novak and John Lawrence Birnbaum. Died peacefully on September 13, 2023, at home in Hankinson, ND.  He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Volgerson Birnbaum, four children, Jill, Joey, Jamie, and Jon, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by his sisters Agnes and Leona and brother John.  He is preceded in death by his parents and eight siblings.

Ray was a lover of the outdoors and was a gardener, hunter, trapper, and fisherman.  He loved to plant trees, grow tomatoes and leaf through seed catalogs.  He was also a veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy onboard the U.S.S. Wasp, stationed in Bermuda, Newfoundland, and Azores Islands. He was in operations on the Super Constellation planes as a part of the early warning squadron that was assigned to the North Atlantic Barrier.

After the Navy, he returned to Hankinson. Ray was resourceful and entrepreneurial, finding a way to always provide for his family. He and Marilyn loved to travel the world, spending time in places like Egypt, Hong Kong, and Costa Rica. He will be missed by his wife and children, who always knew that he would do anything for us.

A memorial will be held on Saturday, September 23, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at Frank Family Funeral Home in Hankinson, ND.
