North Dakota Bison Processor Gets USDA Expansion Loan

The bison meat processing facility at New Rockford, North Dakota, is getting a $6.2 million federal loan to help it expand.

North American Bison LLC will use the U.S. Department of Agriculture loan to fund an 18,000 square foot expansion to increase their bison processing by 50%. The expansion will add up to 18 jobs.

North American Bison markets products under the TenderBison brand name including steaks, burgers and hot dogs.

USDA Rural Development State Director Erin Oban announced the guaranteed loan in a news release on Thursday, June 15. The Food Supply Chain Guarantee Loan program was funded by the Inflation Reduction Act.

“This $6.2 million loan guarantee to support the past success and future growth of North American Bison is one more example of USDA Rural Development’s commitment to rural communities, small businesses, ag producers, and consumers,” said Oban. “This investment will provide critical funding to one of the few bison processing facilities located in North Dakota, and we’re honored to be a partner in assisting with the expansion of their operation.”

A bison processor has been operating in New Rockford since 1993. The original North American Bison Cooperative filed for bankruptcy in 2004.
