Earlier this week, Woods took to social media to fire a warning to Spieth.
Speaking on PGA Tour SiriusXM Radio’s ‘Gravy & The Sleeze’ show hosted by Colt Knost and Drew Stolz, three-time major champion Spieth could not hide his delight at getting one over on Woods and McIlroy.
But especially Woods.
“Justin and Tiger are really close, JT goes over to Tiger’s house quite often and so he could lean on him a little bit,” said Spieth.
“He almost brought a cane to the first tee [laughs].
“My favourite part of anything I did, you know, Tiger does not lose very often. He hasn’t in his whole career.
“And then at the end, we got those bracelets and Tiger is just standing there having to watch somebody else crowned as champion.
“I don’t know if that’s ever happened to him before. I’m sure he’s finished second at a US Open (he did in 2005 and 2007) when they make you go out there, but I was just kind of laughing. I just said ‘there is more joy in how angry Tiger is right now than there is even winning this thing’. He just smiled, essentially just saying ‘F off’ and that was just his way of smiling like that.
“He was like ‘yeah it’s true’. He’s just so competitive, he’s just not used to losing and even more so having to stand there. I just thought that was a funny situation The Match brought out. We would have been just as pi**ed on the other side.”
Woods, Spieth and Thomas are all competing in this week’s PNC Championship, a 36-hole scramble tournament.
Woods is playing with his son Charlie, while Thomas and Spieth are playing with their fathers.
Team Woods finished runners-up 12 months ago, while Team Thomas won the tournament in 2020.
Team Spieth is making their debut in the tournament.
